Loading up the car at 4am with our breath floating through unusually calm Wellington morning air, double checking a third time that all boots, passes, goggles and boards are in, there’s a sense that its gonna be another unforgettable day. The 344km drive from Wellington to Turoa is absolutely beautiful with pink and golden clouds of the sunrise filling the sky as you wind your way up the coast and through the country side till finally the volcanic mountain makes its magnificent first appearance. For a small crew of Wellington shredders, Tuesday day missions are a weekly passion.

Excitement exits the car with the boys as boots are laced and final thanks are given to God for the overnight dusting of fresh snow and the good times to come. As ‘Weekend Warriors’ only riding one day a week after a 4hr drive to the snow, we quickly make the most of whats on offer. With no park set up due to a re build, we have fun on early season terrain with plenty of wind lips and rocks to pop off.

Now warmed up and the easy access to freshies getting tracked, we make the decision to hike to the crater to explore new terrain and get some fresh tracks. Once at the top we are met by stunning views of the crater lake with steam and snow blowing across the surface and icy cliff faces captivating our creativity. Clear skies provide views of Mt Taranaki with low cloud lapping the foot hills like the ocean. A snack at the summit is always welcome and then we’re straight into it!
